Member of the European Parliament supported a father claiming his right to see his children
Hradec Králové/Brussels – Member of the European Parliament Tomáš Zdechovský supported two fathers from other EU member states who are calling for an international right to see their own children. Spaniard Antonio Miquel and Swede of Bolivian origin Fernando Burgos have been so far unsuccessfully fighting for their children at the court in Hradec Králové. "Courts in the Czech Republic proceed in the case of Mr Miquel in a non-standard and incorrect manner. Now already former wife of Mr Miquel works at the court, that will be deciding in this case, as an English teacher and she is even a friend of the judges from this court. This is a very non-standard procedure,“ says the newly elected Member of the European Parliament Tomáš Zdechovský. This is not the first case Bolivian Fernando Burgos, who is an entrepreneur in Sweden, experienced similar fate as Mr Miquel. He is also demanding justice in the Czech Republic - so far without success: his daughter Antonie was taken from Sweden by her mother without a single reason. The mother claimed that he would never see his daughter again. "He had already five lawyers but he has not attained justice because he is a foreigner. At the same time, there are hundreds of children whose fathers are foreigners and who would give anything just for a bit of interest from the side of their fathers,“ explains MEP Zdechovsky. "I have already talked about the case of Antonio Miquel with my Spanish colleagues from the European Parliament and they were seriously concerned by the situation. I have also informed the Spanish Ambassador in the Czech Republic. I have decided to monitor the entire development of the court proceedings and on Friday I am going to stand, together with Mr Miquel, in front of the building of the court in Hradec Králové. We will be even happier if other people decide to join our efforts," Zdechovský concludes. The Member of the European Parliament Tomáš Zdechovský has been interested in the issue of shared custody for several years. He belongs amongst the initiators of the amendment of the Czech Family Law, which would enable granting of shared custody more commonly. He is also a supporter of the belief that a child has a right not only to its mother but also to its father. Eva Fruhwirtová/Daniel Rejman
